This website aims to keep potential volunteers informed about Royal Aero Club Trust vacancies.

The Trust urgently needs highly motivated volunteers in almost every age group, from all walks of life, backgrounds and fields of activity who would like to assist the Trust with its various and interesting projects. The commitment of volunteers can be as limited or extended as they wish, but every little helps. The Trust does not employ any full-time or part-time staff.

The Trust is a registered Charity and a voluntary organisation.

The activities of the Trust include:

    • conserving the Royal Aero Club’s Collection

    • assisting young persons to participate in air sports and aviation related activities

The Collection includes unique and priceless items of national interest. The Collection of archives include albums of press-cuttings dating from 1784, pre-dating the founding of the Aero Club in 1901. It also includes minute books, albums, official reports, trophies, paintings and artefacts. There are photographs and original letters relating to the Hon. C.S. Rolls, Major Baden-Powell, the Wright Brothers, Louis Blériot, Alcock and Brown, Lady Houston and the celebrated Schneider Trophy Races, Jean Batten, Amy Johnson, Lord Brabazon, Sir Frederick Handley Page and many other famous aviators. Aviators' Record Cards and Certificates of the first pilots to qualify to fly aeroplanes in the UK. The Trust's "Flying for Youth" programme includes awarding youngsters Flying Bursaries and Flight Sim Bursaries. Also, creating websites that will appeal to youngsters in the 6 to 21 year age groups to increase their awareness of air sport and related activities and in particular to encourage their participation in such activities.

All our vacancies are part-time and unsalaried but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. Whilst our Registered Office is in Leicester, practically all of our vacancies are home-based, which could almost be anywhere in the UK.

Current Opportunities

Volunteer to assist with digitising historic and unique aviation postcards and photographs in the Royal Aero Club collection

The Trust wishes to appoint a part-time, unsalaried and home-based volunteer or a person on part-time secondment from a professional or commercial organisation (on a pro-bono basis) or a retired person, to help digitise part of the Royal Aero Club collection.

The Royal Aero Club archival collection includes photographs and postcards which are currently stored at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon in North-West London, but the collection is not presently available to the public.

As and when any archival material is temporarily removed from RAF Museum, Hendon for processing, it will be necessary for it to be insured.

The Trust would now like to make selected images available (a) 'on-line' and (b) on CDs to aviation enthusiasts and researchers in the UK and around the world.

Role

    • Scan, digitise and write to disks, copies of selected images from the Royal Aero Club collection. These images have copyright protection

    • Ensure that the process of scanning, digitising and writing to disks conforms to agreed specifications and with the Trust's "Terms of Reference".

Qualifications

    • Experience of scanning, digitising and writing images to CDs

    • An interest and knowledge of aerospace and aviation would be advantageous

    • Will have or have use of suitable high-quality computer, scanner and CD/DVD, etc. recording equipment

    • Computer-literate and experience of I.T.

    • Will have telephone, fax, computer and an e-mail address.

There is no remuneration. Only budgeted expenses will be reimbursed.

Time commitment: Flexible and by mutual arrangement.
